The history of Klausenrace - chronology

1922-1934 - The Beginning of a Legend
In the early days, the Klausenrace was by far the most popular and most difficult mountain race of that time. The best and most ambitious drivers came together to compete on the 21.5 km long gravel road from Linthal to the summit of the Klausen pass that led to an altitude of 1,237 meters along 136 curves. Viewers came from around the world to witness this spectacle. The one, who mastered the race in record time, became a legend: Top drivers, such as Rudolf Caracciola, Hans Stuck, Tazio Nuvolari, Achille Varzi, Whitney Straight or Louis Chiron are symbols of the legendary mountain race and give an idea of the high standard of the race.

1993 – Rebirth of the Legends
25 July 1993 saw the rebirth of the Klausenrace race. At the first Klausrace-Memorial race, over 400 vintage racing and sports cars as well as racing motorcycles and three-wheelers rekindled the spirit of the mountain race.

1998
25,000 spectators from all over Europe gathered along the track to be taken back to the time of the legendary mountain race. Numerous cars competed against each other to successfully break the record of Caraciolas several times. A new benchmark was set by the Englishman Julian Majzub on his Bugatti 35 B: 13. 49. 08!

2002
Even the Klausenrace-Memorial 2002 was a spectacular event with legendary racing cars: An Alfa Romeo 158, the legendary 'Alfetta', whose most powerful version with an engine capacity of 1.5 litres produced 425 hp and 1950 Farina and 1951 Fangio had made the racers world champions; the only still roadworthy Bugatti version 53 with four-wheel drive, two Maserati 4CL, a 16-cylinder car of the version C from Auto Union.  The fleet of more than 30 Bugattis which knew how to convince the public was another highlight. The motorcycles included even machines that already had been part of the legendary Klausenrace race: a Harley-Davidson (1929), a Condor (1932) and a Motosacoche (1934).
The Briton, Bill Tuer covered the distance that year with the best time: 14 minutes 39 seconds. At the main race, he won the biggest rock crystal as a trophy.

2006
The fourth international Klausenrace-Memorial was held between 21 and 24 September 2006. Vintage motorcycles, motorcycles with sidecars, sports and racing cars older than 1939.
